The Orb of Agamotto is an item featured in the mainstream Marvel Universe. It is one of the mystic items utilized by the Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange.
Description[]
The Orb of Agamotto is a crystal ball and a powerful artifact housed within a special container within the Chamber of Shadows. Its current owner is Doctor Stephen Strange, Sorcerer Supreme and Master of the Mystic Arts. Strange keeps the Orb of Agamotto sealed atop a three-legged pedestal in the Chamber of Shadows at his Sanctum Sanctorum.
The Orb of Agamotto is used for divination purposes and can alert the user to pending threats. The Orb can also teleport individuals from one location to another and can even draw them inside the ball itself, which is home to an interdimensional pocket dimension wherein resides Agamotto himself. The interior realm of the Orb of Agamotto is referred to as "unreality" where all things are possible.
The Orb can peer into other dimensions and other worlds, automatically detect and locate the use of powerful magic, and reveal any great evil threat to the world. The Orb is even capable of finding dead beings, at least those the user had been considerably familiar with. The Orb can be used as a gateway for the viewer to enter into the dimensions it displays. It also seems to be dimensionally linked to the Eye of Agamotto. Individuals entering the Orb can at times exit through the Eye and vice versa.
History[]
When Doctor Strange suffered a near-fatal injury at the hands of the Silver Dagger, he found himself drawn into the "unreality" dimension within the Orb of Agamotto. There he met Agamotto himself, who appeared before Strange in the form of a caterpillar. When Strange asked him how one could escape from the orb, the caterpillar told him that in unreality, the only way to find the exit is to find the center. While traversing the mad inner world, Strange came upon facsimiles of his friends in the Defenders. These beings, bereft of a soul, were not his true allies and even tried to kill. (DS2: 1-2)
