New York is one of the fifty states located in the United States of America and one of forty-eight continental U.S. states. It's capital is Albany, though it's largest and most populous city is New York City. Known as the gateway to immigration, New York plays a vital role in the history of Marvel Comics. In the real world, the offices of Marvel Publishing, Inc. are located in New York City and many Marvel Comics creators are born in New York. In the internal Marvel Universe, New York is home to the majority of the company's superhero population as well as several key horror genre characters. North of New York City lies Westchester County, which serves as the base of operations for mutant civil rights activist Professor Charles Xavier and his covert superhero team, the X-Men. The fictionalized setting of New York was introduced in the inaugural story in Marvel Comics #1 entitled "The Human Torch".
