Gregory Belial was a criminal mastermind and the leader of the HYDRA detachment known as the D.O.A., aka, the Department of Occult Armaments. Under the supervision of HYDRA commander Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, the D.O.A. were assigned to procure vampire DNA in order to genetically create a perfect vampire stormtrooper. (NST: 2)
On one mission, the D.O.A. went to the Southeastern United States to disinter the remains of a young woman named Suze Harlow, who was one of many such women to meet an untimely end at the fangs of the vampire lord known as Dracula. Suze's grief-stricken father, Jeb Harlow tried to stop them, but the D.O.A. easily incapacitated him, ultimately killing him before taking off with the woman's remains and bringing them back to HYDRA. - The character of Gregory Belial was created by writer D.G. Chichester and artists Ron Garney and Tom Palmer.
- Had a pet raven named Edgar. The animal was named after writer Edgar Allan Poe who wrote the poem The Raven in 1845. Poor Edgar lost his life at the hands of a shotgun wielding drunk named Jeb Harlow after the D.O.A. attempted to disinter the remains of his daughter. [1]
