The Flames of the Faltine is the name of a magic spell and super-power featured in the Doctor Strange family of titles published by Marvel Comics.

Description[]

The Flames of the Faltine are mystical green energy that can be harnessed, channeled and projected by certain magic users, particularly high level sorcerers. The power originates from the Faltine, a race of magical energy beings from an alternate dimension. The Faltine are actually composed of mystical flame energy and a portion of the Flames are also used to comprise the Flames of Regency - a title held by the reigning Regent of the Dark Dimension.

The sorceresss known as Umar once unleashed the Flames of the Faltine against the Asgardian God Thor. (T@: 9)

The Flames of the Faltine were once used to melt the frozen tendrils of Ikthalon. (DS: 33)

Capabilities[]

The most commonly used purpose of the Flames of the Faltine is for offensive attack. Magic users can call upon the Flames of the Faltine to project a wave of green flaming energy. They can also be dispersed as concentrated fireballs of green eldritch energy.

While the Flames of the Faltine do not necesarilly burn it's targets on a physical level, they can burn out the effects of other spells and even conventional ailments such as illness and poisons.

Invoking the Flames of the Faltine can also be used to counter certain entrapment spells, such as the Roving Rings of Raggadorr. In contrast, they can also be used to reverse such spells that have already been erected.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Doctor Strange often invokes the Flames of the Faltine, not just for purposes of incantations, but also as an expression of shock and awe. Amongst the various phrases Strange is known to entreat at any given moment, "By the Flames of the Faltine!", is one of his most often-used oaths.
  • Another type of offensive mystical attack are Bolts of Bedevilment. These are actually the most common of spells used in magic combat.
